Through x-ray diffraction material structures can be probes. X-rays are scattered by the atoms outer electrons and since the have a wavelength in same order of magnitude as inter-atomic distances, in certain crystallographic directions positive interference occurs. Knowing the wavelength and the direction, the inter-atomic distance can be calculated. In electrode materials this inter-atomic distance might change with lithium concentration. Also different material treatment can change this inter atomic distances such as annealing, elastic stress or particle size.
